It’s official – Dallas-Fort Worth was the top market in the country for new apartments in 2017.
Developers finished 28,996 new rental units in the area last year.
New York was second with 22,666 new apartments followed by Houston with 20,759 units, according to the latest numbers from Richardson-based RealPage.
"Local deliveries in 2018 should be nearly identical – 29,497 if you put Dallas and Fort Worth together," said RealPage chief economist Greg Willett. "That’s still the most nationally.
"New York has a similar total number of units under construction, but lots of those New York units are in towers that won’t complete until 2019."
For the 12-month period that ended in January, developers received building permits to start another 20,228 apartments in the Dallas side of the metro area. That was 5.6 percent more than in the previous 12-month period, according to RealPage.
New York City had 29,379 apartment permits in the year ended with January.
